There are three systems for nursing assistance according to Orem:
- Totally compensatory: the nurse works to completely satisfy the patient’s needs.
- Partly compensatory: nurse and patient cooperate.
- Education and support: the nurse guides the patient to acquire skills and knowledge.
Henderson’s theory highlights the 14 essential needs of the human being, consisting of biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual needs. These elements are not separate from one another: the nurse helps the patient to achieve the most advanced level of autonomy possible.
Based on the concepts of nursing assistance, Gentilcure carries out an initial in-depth analysis. This allows acquiring an initial biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual idea of the individual and understanding his/her resources and difficulties.
