Our care philosophy
Our care philosophy has its roots in Dorothea Orem and Virginia Henderson’s concept of care.
In the self-care theory (concept of self) of Dorothea Orem, the nurse only intervenes when the patient is unable to look after him/herself.
There are three systems for nursing assistance according to Orem:
Henderson’s theory highlights the 14 essential needs of the human being, consisting of biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual needs. These elements are not separate from one another: the nurse helps the patient to achieve the most advanced level of autonomy possible.
Based on the concepts of nursing assistance, Gentilcure carries out an initial in-depth analysis. This allows acquiring an initial biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual idea of the individual and understanding his/her resources and difficulties.
After analyzing the starting situation, we devise a care plan that is customized to suit the needs and expectations of the patient. The plan is drawn up – as well as with the patient – in consultation with the family, the family physician and any other support figures.
While devising and drawing up our care plans, we protect the quality of life of our patients and their dignity in their own home.
In particular, for mental healthcare nursing in the home, the Gentilcure home care service uses the model theory reference developed by US nurse Hildegard Elizabeth Peplau. Peplau provided important contributions to nursing theory and is known for developing the theory of psychodynamic nursing, as well as making important contributions to the treatment and care of patients with behavioral or personality disorders. In her theory of psychodynamic nursing, the relationship between nurse and patient is placed at the center of the nursing practice.
Peplau placed a great deal of importance on the exchange between professional and client, which requires active relationships and exchanges. This vision contrasted with models of the period, that were prevalently characterized by passive relationships. In conclusion, the model of psychodynamic theory is based on the dynamic role of the nurse and on relational development with the patient.
